SMC Asia Car Distributors Corp., the official importer and distributor of BMW in the Philippines, has finally revealed the new BMW 7 Series. Available in two variants; the 730i and the long-wheelbase 745Le hybrid, both in Pure Excellence trim.

To state that this sedan is huge is a big (get it?) understatement. The extra 140mm of wheelbase gives a canyon-like legroom for rear-seat passengers (more than enough space to cross your legs). The BMW 730i Pure Excellence (5,120 mm) and its long-wheelbase twin (5,260 mm) are longer than their previous iterations, although the width and height is the same;Just a lot of space in between.

The now-distinctive front end features the humongous “kidney grille”, which, admittedly, cause a lot of  debates amongst enthusiasts and clients alike. We’ll leave the main issue for a future article, but suffice to say that it has made the 7 Series popular or infamous — depending on your preference. The hood clearance is now taller, encompassing the grille and slimmer LED headlights. Overall, the new fascia will catch your attention.A strong presence indeed.

The lower end of the restyled bumper apron now have air intakes that direct cold air to the front brakes. This forces the air around the car edges, into the undercarriage to cut down on wind turbulence. This is in anticipation of higher top speeds that is expected of the 7 series spirited use.

The side view also commands respect and awe. Most noticable are the chrome trims that are shaped like 90º boomerang, emitting a subdued sporty elegance. Compliemting the overall design are the choice of rolling stock; The 730i has 18-inch light alloy wheels in Multi-spoke style 619 while the 745Le makes do with 19-inch wheels in Double-spoke style 630 Bicolor. Both cars feature run-flat tires (which negates the use of a spare tire).

As of press time, Engine choices are limited to a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower gasoline engine that makes 265hp and 400Nm of torque for the BMW 730i Pure Excellence, while the revolutionary 3.0-liter BMW TwinPower inline-6 gasoline paired with an electric motor, is the choice for the  new 745Le Pure Excellence. This version serves as BMW’s first-ever Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)  offering for the local market. The 745Le is capable of up to 55 kilometers of electric range and offers combined outputs of 394hp and 600Nm of torque!

With the BMW 745e plug-in hybrid, you can have your cake and eat it too: the noteworthy performance of the 6-cylinder engine and the fuel efficiency of the latest-technology high-voltage batteries. The main point here is the hybrid drive; this innovative electric motor is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, just like a gas powered powerplant! Electric power can propel the car and maintain speed up to a reported 140kph. Quite a feat for performance and fuel efficiency

The 7 Series is finished in fine leather “Dakota” upholstery combined with a Fine-wood trim “Fineline” high-gloss with aluminum trims. It also boasts electrically adjustable Comfort rear seats and a Harman Kardon Surround Sound system.

The most distinct feature of the 7 Series is the 7.0 interface that allows users to take advantage of the familiar iDrive controller and touchscreen capability to maximize the BMW Live Cockpit Professional. This system is made up of a navigation and multimedia system, together with a digital, high-resolution 12.3in instrument cluster and a 10.25 Control Display. Apple CarPlay is standard across the range for on-time smartphone connectivity, while BMW Gesture Control is standard in the 745Le.

Surprisingly, the new 7 Series is priced competitively, lower than you might expect. The BMW 730i Pure Excellence is priced at PHP5,990,000,  While the new BMW 745Le Pure Excellence is priced at PHP9,590,000; Yep, you read that right.

The BMW 730i Pure Excellence comes in Arctic Grey, Black Sapphire, Imperial Blue, Mineral White, and Sophisto Grey.

The BMW 745Le Pure Excellence is available in Black Sapphire, Mineral White, and Sophisto Grey.

The new 7 Series comes with a 5-year or 200,000-kilometer manufacturer’s warranty.
