Suzuki Ph has released the remodeled subcompact hatchback fighter, the new Suzuki Swift, for some months now, and has caught the fancy of enthusiasts all over. Although sharing the same design profile of the previous model, sharp-eyed “Swifters” will spot new design cues, like the big hexagonal shaped grille, sleeker headlights and the now in-vogue floating C-Pillar. Most notable is the relocated rear door handle.

Trying to get a piece of the millennial pie, styling cues are skewed towards the younger set. AC Vents are now round, simulating aircraft pieces, bigger infotainment system, round AC controls and red accent lights in the gauges. Also, the flat bottom of the steering wheel is a sporty feature.

Interior space is quite generous, although center of gravity is lower. It can fit 5 regular passengers, but offers limited cargo space because of the hatch geometry. More space is available when rear seats are folded. Fabric is soft to the touch, but adheres to dirt easier. Seat covers are a must.

Powered by a small but surprisingly feisty 1.2-liter Dual Jet engine that exerts 82 hp, and 113 Nm of torque. Mated to either a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a five-speed manual gearbox, it can hold its own on traffic light races and highway jaunts. Quite thrilling to drive, actually.

The wheels are of new design; polished with black accents. Bigger too, at 185/55/16 specs, the tires are grippier and handles better, but deflects shock to the passenger compartment, actually feeling and hearing the thud of the suspension.

Providing the stopping power is a 4-wheel disc brake system, a most welcome feature nowadays.

The Suzuki Swift is fun to drive in and around the metropolis. Easy to navigate around traffic, and easier to park. It can be driven faster around corners and can hold its own against bigger-engined cars. And its a gas miser.

This is the subcompact hatch for your everyday use, whether for school, work or just doing chores; you will look forward doing these with the Swift. Sweet and Swift.
