Just when you think that sedans are heading off to that great automotive sunset, one car – a subcompact, made a U-turn and headed back to the SUV saturated market, and offered a simple traffic-beating solution. A subcompact sedan called the KIA Soluto.

Kia Motors Philippines (now a member of AC Industrials) jumped in the subcompact category that is also a favorite of the TNVS industry. It’s small but roomy, small but torquey engine—and a low starting price that is crazy affordable.

The Soluto offers more in a small package: Power windows, defogger, 7inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  Standards features are ABS, ISOFIX and power locks. For the first-time car buyer, this is more than enough. The driver seat even has a right-side arm rest!

One peculiar feature that takes a little getting used to, is the power window controls – they are located at the lower middle of the dash. This is the only flaw we see in an otherwise smartly designed car.

Power is provided by a 1.4-liter Kappa petrol engine, rated at a surprisingly sprite 94 hp and 132 Nm of torque. Mated to two transmission options – a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Base 14in tires and rims beg to be replaced with 15 inchers or even 16s, just for the looks alone.

The 1.4 liter Kappa engine. Peppy!

We at StreettalkPh prefer the manual tranny. Shifting at 2500 rpms yields the best acceleration without bogging down. The trick here is depressing the clutch only 2/3 of the way, shifting to the next gear without much rpm drop; less stress on the engine and transmission too.

Learning something about the pedigree…

The Kia Soluto is the smart choice for first time car buyers, students or sales people. It’s esy to drive, frugal and has neat options. With today’s traffic, the KIA Soulto is the best solution.
