At long last, we managed to procure a Honda HR-V test unit from Honda Cars Philippines Inc., (HMPI) after a few long months. Apparently, the other media were scrambling to test it first, which was understandable. It’s supposed to be an improvement from the previous model, and that’s enough reason to get our hands on one.
The exterior shape is similar to its predecessor, showcasing the SUV-like lower body developed under the Honda’s “Dynamic Cross Solid” concept. Based on the popular Honda Jazz platform, it has the car-like qualities with an SUV stance, bolstering ride height and interior space with the comfortable ride of a sedan.
The powerplant is the same reliable 1.8 Liter SOHC i-VTEC engine that boasts a maximum power of 142 ps at 6,500 rpm and 17.5 kg-m of torque at 4,300 rpm, and is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) developed based on Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology. Now, it’s equipped with Honda’s Eco Assist System, which consists of the ECON mode and Eco-Coaching Ambient Light , helps encourage fuel-efficient driving. Its’ now more fuel efficient, reaching about 16km/L (at 95kph) on our test drive to Subic via NLEX.
The interior is nice and plush, at par with the more luxurious SUVs. The dash is tastefully rendered with gray and black plastic. The seats are wider, and the rear legroom is generous with leg space. The back is now more cargo-friendly with its wider tailgate. There’s a lot of cup holders, and the console is deep enough for more storage space. Oh, did we mention that the HR-V has Paddle shifters?
The Honda HR-V is sized just right for the young professional or a small family. Urban jaunts and long trips are easier with the comfortable ride, while giving more space for passenger comfort and cargo. It’s easier to manuever in tight spaces and has more than enough power even when at full load capacity.
